This graph is “Total Change in Division I Sports Sponsorship since 1988” graph is from '88 on and does not go all the way back to 1981-82 as there are no data on net change prior to ‘88.  The points were figured by adding the yearly net change in sports sponsorship for Division I athletics to the previous year’s net change.

In ’88 - ‘89 there were 21 male teams added in the NCAA and 70 male teams dropped.  Therefore – 49 is the net change in sports sponsorship for men that year.  The net change in male sports sponsorship for ’89 -’90 was -11 so we added - 49 and -11 to get - 60 and that is where we plotted the next point.  In ’90-’91 the net change in male sports was 13 so we added - 60 and 13 = - 47, we plotted it and so forth.  We did the same for women.

As you can see by the end the lines are incredibly far apart and the net change in sports sponsorship remains negative on the men’s side.
